The SPF You Love Wearing Is the One That Protects You

Most people do not need another lecture about sunscreen. They need a sunscreen they actually want to put on.

We all know the abandoned bottles. Too thick. Too greasy. Too chalky. Fine for a beach bag, perhaps, but never quite invited into the morning routine. The problem is that protection only works when it reaches the skin in the right amount and is reapplied when needed.

That is why texture is not a superficial detail. It can be the difference between knowing SPF matters and wearing it consistently.

UVA, UVB and the protection you should look for

UVB is closely associated with sunburn. UVA penetrates more deeply and contributes to premature skin ageing; both forms of ultraviolet radiation matter when protecting the skin.

The NHS sunscreen guidance recommends at least SPF 30 for UVB protection and at least four star UVA protection. Broad spectrum products are designed to protect against UVA and UVB.

SPF should sit alongside shade, clothing and sensible sun behaviour rather than replace them. The NHS also notes that sunburn can happen in the UK, even on cloudy days.

How much sunscreen should you use?

The honest answer is usually more than people think.

Apply generously and evenly to exposed skin, including often missed areas such as the ears and neck. Follow the directions on your product, use it before sun exposure and reapply frequently. Reapply after swimming, perspiring or towel drying, even when a formula is described as water resistant.

If you apply too little, you will not receive the level of protection stated on the pack.

Make SPF the final step, not an afterthought

A useful morning order is:

  1. Cleanse as your skin needs.
  2. Apply your chosen serum.
  3. Moisturise if required.
  4. Finish with sunscreen before makeup.

The ritual does not need to feel complicated. The Alchemy of Skincare brings science, nature and daily ritual together, making skin protection feel like part of caring for yourself rather than a seasonal chore.

Our lightweight SPF 50 face cream combines high sun protection with skincare ingredients including niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. It is designed to feel comfortable across skin types and to leave an invisible finish, removing some of the most common reasons people avoid daily SPF.

Does darker skin need sunscreen?

Melanin offers some natural protection, but people of every skin tone can experience sun damage and develop skin cancer. Advice should always be individual, particularly where there is a medical condition, photosensitising medicine or a history of skin cancer. Speak to a pharmacist, GP or dermatologist when you need personal guidance.

A habit built through pleasure

There is a tendency to think good skincare habits must be powered by discipline. Enjoyment is often more effective.

When a product spreads easily, sits comfortably and works with the rest of your routine, reaching for it becomes natural. The bottle moves from the back of the cupboard to beside your cleanser. Protection becomes something you do each morning without negotiating with yourself.

That is the alchemy of a good ritual. Science creates the protection. The sensory experience helps you return to it.
